“Eating is an Agricultural Act?” The Ethics of Food and Eating
DESCRIPTION/REFLECTION
Describe the project and some of the things you learned throughout.
The project we were assigned included reading the book, "The omnivores dilemma". In this book it taught us about the hidden things in our food that we would've never even thought would be in there. It also broke down the way our American food system works and how it effects has its pros and cons on our society as a whole. I also learned about my own ethics on food and had to deeply think about what my ethics are and how they are displayed on me and my life. I had to put all of this into my essay explaining my food ethic.
How did the interdisciplinary nature of this project impact your learning? How did studying food in both classes impact your learning?
The interdisciplinary nature of this project impacted me by allowing me to see both social and chemical reactions on food. It has broadened my thinking and knowledge about food in general, allowing me understand a lot more about where it comes from and how it is made up. Studying food in both classes affected my learning by being able to connect things together with food that I would of never known without studying both aspects of food. An example of this is how organic gluten free wheat and flour will not rise when baked, where as processed gluten free flour and wheat will rise a bit more due to their starch content.
What are your main takeaways from studying food academically? How has your thinking about food changed from before?
The main thing that I took away from this food project is how terrible conditions are for our animals and plants in our food system, and how it is hidden away. I have also taken away how we can shape our food ethics with our eating habits and doing this can make your life more joyful and happy. My thinking has changed in the sense that now I will look for more cruelty free options when I shop for food, and I now know what I am supporting whenever I buy whatever products I buy, weather it is a big corporation, or buying a local food product that is organic.
Food Ethic Essay
My food ethic journey
We all go through life consuming and enjoying various different types of food, whether it’s fast food, homemade food, restaurant food, and even frozen food. Here in America we are fortunate enough to be able to have these options available to us with a short car ride away. While having all of these options available for us we all have to decide what foods we like and don’t like. We also have to decide what types of foods we want to consume and how we consume it. Developing a food ethic as an individual is a freedom Americans have, and just like everybody else, I have gone through a process in order to achieve my current ethics on food and why I have chosen to create my ethic the way it is today. I feel that my ethics consist of being healthy and choosing foods that come from organic sources, although this is sometimes challenged by outside influences.
As children we all adapted our diets from our parents. Whatever they ate, we ate. For some people they are given a certain diet that consists of organic foods that are nutritious while other diets may have consisted of more processed food and typical food that is more generally bought. In my case, my childhood “diet” consisted of all of these things. Back then I would spend a lot of time with both sets of grandparents, and while they would take care of me they would both make me food. With them I would eat a mix of nutritious foods and fast food with little care for what was consumed. Once I went back home my parents would limit desserts. They valued nutritious foods and preferred to buy healthy/organic food whenever possible.
Ever since I could remember my mom was always looking for any healthy alternatives in our household. She has impacted my food ethic in the sense that I now seek healthier options. She would always correlate positive things with eating healthily as well. Typically she would tell me that veggies would help me grow up big and strong, or even give me a treat afterward if I really did not like a certain vegetable or fruit. For these things, I am super grateful because not only did it train me to like most healthy foods, but it also pushes me today to continue to push to eat healthily and try and learn to like new things if I feel they can be beneficial to me. A current example of this is me working on liking onions and olives. Any time I have an opportunity to eat them I push to eat them in an attempt to eventually add these to my preferred food palette considering they can add nutritional value.
Currently I work at McDonald’s. Working here I see the behind the scenes of everything fast food has to offer. I see how the food is prepared from beginning to end. Experiencing this, seeing this, and participating in preparing it has really opened my eyes to notice how truly unhealthy processed food is. Although I've seen this, it is still a struggle that I have been overcoming with time and discipline. The struggle mainly comes from sheer hunger. Working in fast food all I see throughout my day is all the food that I'm handling every minute of my shift. It is also easy to get a quick meal before you head home after a long day of work. Sometimes I don’t even get off of work until 9 or 10 and it is easy to simply take that easy way out. It is a struggle that I have quickly adapted to overcome by finding solutions to my dilemma.
A solution I have found to be helpful in dealing with my struggle is trying to have a different approach to things. I have started taking an initiative to this by preparing my meals before work and putting them into tupperware. I heat them up in the microwave when I get home and am able to have a healthy meal that seems easier and effortless since the work was put in beforehand. I have also invested in some meal kits that come weekly and are from organic sources. They show me how to make the food, increasing ease, and adding to my knowledge in how to prepare food. Doing this has improved my diet and correlates with my food ethic and that makes me feel happier overall.
Life is full of decisions and food is something I am grateful for being one of them. I feel that food is something we can all connect with, and it really is something beautiful. It connects us all in a way that not a lot of other things can. To this day I still have a lot to learn about my own food ethics and how I can fully translate them into my life. In conclusion I want to look into studying this topic more in my own free time to be able to achieve my goal of translating my food ethics and becoming happier with my lifestyle.

My life on earth-Philosophy Project
Paragraph 1: Project Description
Describe the project itself and the direction you personally took it. Which essential question(s) was your project seeking to answer? What was the inspiration behind the direction you took and the perspective you developed?
The project I decided to go with was doing a poster board that has a quote that represents life and how it is built up by whirlwinds and how it all builds up to create a big tornado. All of the whirlwinds make a difference to create your life. This metaphor was mainly inspired by the philosopher Robert Nozick from Harvard university. His philosophy was configured from the idea that if you “maximise your pleasurable experiences you will be happier” and through his studies of his own philosophy he realized you need bad experiences to make your pleasurable one more meaningful to you and to your life.
Paragraph 2: New Insights
Please explain what new insights you developed over the course of this project either about yourself, life, the human place in the world/universe? How has your thinking been influenced by our study of philosophy and ethics?
Some insights I have developed over the course of this project is mainly on myself and discovering within myself on what I really think about my life and how I think about my personal philosophy and what truly means something to me in life and how I believe in it. My thinking has definitely been influenced in the sense that i’ve never really thought about what I think about life and what my philosophical beliefs really were.
Paragraph 3: Further Questions and Intellectual Work Left to Do
Where do your intellectual quandaries go from here? What do you wonder about now that you may not have before? What questions do you still need to answer for yourself. If you like, include a list of roughly 4-6 questions this project sparked for you about yourself, life, or the human place in the world/universe.
So for me I feel that I am going to be more aware about my philosophy and on how I look at life as a whole moving on with my life. As of now some questions I have include what I still believe spiritually and if I want to pursue that. Another question I have is what our purpose is as humans as a whole. I wanna know if all of us as humans have one common philosophical belief and how we could use that for our benefit. And my last question is that people say that money cannot buy happiness, but can you ever be truly happy without any money?
