Sustainable Design Project Reflection
Written Description
My first thoughts on the project was how engaging and free it was, and I loved how we could express our creativity into building a structure or space with a sustainable design. I personally like being outside and so I loved being outside learning new construction building skills and also having a purpose to build these structures. It was also really awesome that we could actually make make these structures not only for a grade but so we can use them ourselves for our years to come here at our school.
During the field trips going into the community and also having guest speakers come in and teach us about sustainable design and how sustainability works, I learned how many different materials were used into building a sustainable house and how they are made and used. I also learned how gardens use different plants to keep their gardens thriving with good food. During this I learned how all the different plants work together. Through these field trips I also did have some questions unanswered like, How did they find these great materials to use on a sustainable house that work effectively? And I also wondered how the gardens kept their vegetation thriving even during colder times of the year.
Sustainable design comes in various forms and can be incorporated in the strangest places you would never even think of. It's all around us and we don't even notice it. Overall based on what I have learned on sustainable design I would have to define it as an eco-friendly balanced self maintaining structure or area.
Outdoor Prototype Description
After learning about sustainable design and how it works we were assigned to find out how people generally feel comfortable and peaceful in an area. We interviewed various people of different categories and found that many enjoy nature and natural things around them when they are at a peaceful state of mind and feel relaxed. The interviews helped us complete some needs and values to help us design and construct a structure that would meet these goals.
During this time we had freedom to be creative and design and construct an area students and community members could relax and maybe learn, study, or socialize in a peaceful environment. I took advantage with the time and freedom to help come up with ideas on how the structure could be structurally sound and how we could make the aesthetics of it look nice and inviting. Me and my group members also came up with other ideas along the way when things didn’t exactly go our way.
Thankfully we finished our small structure and had some successes that we had planned. We had it
built with a shaded sheet metal roof and had nature around the area and had a nice seating inside that has pillows and a weatherproof carpet that keeps you cool on a hot summer day.
Well me and my group members all helped build and stabilize the structure, but something I incorporated with the help of another group member was the graffiti art inside and all around it. We really liked the idea on how it could reflect the creativity of our animas high school culture.
TEA Paragraph
During this project a “HOHAM” or a Habit Of Heart And Mind that I grew the most in was Perseverance. The reason why I say it’s perseverance is because originally at the beginning we wanted to make a pergola structure above the creek and to get this done we tried to get permits and funding so we took up a week of our time trying to contact engineers and architects and have people pull different permits. Unfortunately by the end of our week we couldn’t get a permit on our limited time, so we had to switch gears and build something else, somewhere else. Through this whole process we had to persevere in failing to get our challenges done and when we realized it wouldn’t work with our time limit we immediately switched our idea with only a week left and we had to persevere to get this completely new project done.
A Habit Of Heart And Mind that I need to grow in to be the best project based learning learner is advocacy because when we were building me and my group members didn’t get much advocacy when we were having problems. If we had used advocacy we could of possibly realized we couldn’t get the permit in time and could of had more time on our new structure.
A time when things got hard and I solved it was when we realized we couldn’t get the permit and my group members wanted to keep waiting for it. I suggested moving on to a new idea and using our same principles that we were using on our old idea. Me and my group thought hard and came to a conclusion that this was our best option.
A time when things got hard and I couldn’t solve it was when we were trying to pull a permit. The permit was the one thing stopping us from building and it was taking a lot of time. This was difficult because no matter how much we called different departments and different people, it was still the same wait time and there was nothing we could do about it.
Success for the project when we started would look like planning ahead for certain legalities to our ideas and start funding sooner. It also would of had things planned out with more organization. Success for the project now looks like a nicely built structure that serves its purpose to have people enjoy the outdoors to help them concentrate on work and enjoy people around them.
If I were to give a new student advice on how to begin this project I would have to say to make sure to look at every aspect of the project beforehand, even if it could take away from some creativity. The realities should come first, then you can add whatever you want to make it nice and creative. I would also advise to use advocacy for any little thing so they can get things done faster and more productively.

The Truth of Happiness
In this project we did lots of Reasearch and we did a happiness project to understand the topic even more in depth and personally. We also made a happiness video to share our views on the truth of happiness and a part of happiness.
1.)I have discovered the truth of happiness is having meaning in your life and doing it with positive family members and friends.
2.) The greatest challenge I faced in this project was doing the video in the small amount of time we had.
3.)I have grown as a group worker by being able to share the work equally and be able to share ideas and compromise both of our ideas.
4.) I think I would of made more b roll scenes and added a more variety to the scenes to add even more interest to the video.

Socialization and Mask Project
In this project we learned about socialization throughout the whole first semester and how it works, and how it affects us in our every day lives and how it affects other people in their every day lives. We had many weeks to work on our essay after we learned about socialization and we did many refinements and tried to make our essays the best they could be. While we created our essays we had to reflect and think about our own mask we have on. After we made the essay me made a physical mask and painted exactly what mask we wear every day. They came out great and we made an exhibition for the community to see what we have been learning and we made different rooms with different themes. We decorated each room creative;y and made them as informational and making it interactive.
My Mask
My ReflectionThis whole semester learning about socialization has been a good learning experience. We learned a lot on how many different aspects of socialization there are and how little we pay attention to different parts of it. How every part has its ways of working in our everyday lives. The things we have learned on socialization have transformed the way I see the world and how I will see it for now on. It has showed me how much our race and gender and other aspects of socialization actually have an impact on us and how our class could raise the possibility where and how far you will go in life. Making an exhibition for the community to come and see our great work from the semester has let me show exactly what I have learned
I grew a lot as a writer writing my socialization essay. One way I have noticed how I grew is how I layed out my essay, I have never made an essay with such detail and information. With the layout guides we had been given, they helped me learn exactly how to put my information into my essay and not making my essay boring essay with plain information. For example in the beginning I believe it actually intrigues the reader into wanting to know more about the information and it says, “We have all been socialized in our lives, almost like codes inserted into us so we do things “properly” in life. But what exactly is socialization?” . Throughout my whole essay it has lots of great examples from different sources and they lay out with my essay fairly well. Overall writing this essay has helped me make it interesting to read and share to others. This is probably the best essay I have ever made so far in my grade school career. Making an exhibition for the community to come and see our great work from the semester has taught me a lot on being a project worker. It has taught me how to be able to organize and plan out every aspect of our exhibition and how to make sure every activity and project had an effect on the community before they left. It let me use my creativity to great use and make it a reality to share to the community around me and make sure they know exactly what we learn and make sure they know exactly how we use that learning in actual life. As a group member with my peers I loved working together using all of our ideas and making them real. I believe as a group member I helped make sure everything stayed balanced and made sure everything we worked on came together for the big night. If I had to re-live and re-do the night again I would definitely add more to our room when it comes to creativity and make our room more self explanatory for the general people. This has been a great project and I have learned a lot, and it has definitely affected the way I see the world today. |
EssayWe have all been socialized in our lives, almost like codes inserted into us so we do things “properly” in life. But what exactly is socialization? According to the dictionary the definition of socialization is, “A continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal identity and learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position.” I believe In other words, men and women have to follow certain rules to be considered normal. These shape them to become average people and live normally in society. The certain rules revolve around the 6 agents of socialization: Family, School, Media, Peers, Religion, and Sports/Activities. Throughout my whole life I have been socialized through peers, media and school that I have to be tough and strong and smart to be a great stereotypical “Perfect Man”.
Growing up as a child and going into adolescence, I got told by many people to “shake it off” and “man up.” My sister on the other hand got many “are you ok” and “be careful.” I have been socialized to be strong on many terms, whether it’s physical or emotional. In movies and television it always showed that men had to be tough and strong. The nerdy smart kids were always the outcasts and always outsiders and almost even girly. Just like anybody else, I never tried to be an outcast at this young age, so back then I still wanted to be like these, “Big tough male characters.” In the TED talk, “A Call to Men,” Tony Porter told the audience about the, “Man Box” which includes things like, “only show anger” or “never show fear or emotions.” He gave an example of his children which are only 18 months apart. He mentioned that if his daughter went running to him crying he would let her cry and do whatever she had to do. But whenever his son ran to him crying, a bell rung in his head to tell his son things like “why you crying”? or “stop crying and go to your room until you can talk to me like a man!” He says he knows it’s wrong, but he finds himself doing things his father did. Both genders have their own so called “boxes” but I feel like the male box is more restricted. This is not right it’s a restriction that doesn’t let us be free as human beings. Now what about my class? Well I consider myself middle class, but what does class have to do with how I am socialized? It actually has a big impact on how I/we are all socialized. In America, money is a big part on where you live and what school you can go to. In America it also basically shows what you are worth and how far you will go. Most americans like to try and live up to the standards of the “American Dream” where you go through school with great grades, go to a fantastic college, then get a well paying job with a nice family and live happily ever after. From what I learned in an economic class simulation, I learned that most Americans in the poor area are very unlikely or have to work very hard to make it to an average middle class. The middle has to work hard to get higher, and the top rich area and their children can live great for their whole lives. For me growing up we never had much money problems. Once and awhile we would have to budget, but eventually we got back up to being ok. I believe in my class has socialized me to believe I can accomplish my dreams, but I would have to work hard for them to become reality. As a teenager I work hard for my grades to be good so I can get into a great college of my choice and go into any profession I want! Economic class has a strain on everybody on how far they can go, whether it’s far or short! Gender has a big impact on what is expected from you, and how you will in general live in life. These days there are many genders and any other than the old “Straight” and “Gay.” I have been socialized in this area to be generally straight and like girls. I learned it from my peers, media and the “manly sports” I have played throughout my childhood and with all the ways people in general accept straight people, it's accepted in the world 100%. There is a video called “Princess boy loves to wear dresses” that loves to wear dresses.” In this video there’s a young 2 year old boy that loves dresses and girly things, his mom didn’t approve at first. She one day went to the costume store and her older son wanted a ninja turtle costume, and her youngest son wanted a princess dress. She automatically said no until her oldest son told her, “just to let him be happy.” This really struck her in a sense where she wondered exactly why exactly she was saying no. This shows us how restricted and closed minded we are about gender, whereas most people don’t even think twice on trying to change their socialized ways of thinking. I was always told to grow up to be a “good man” and maybe that's why most people get socialized the way they are, because of how they have. I have been socialized to be strong and brave, physically and emotionally. Everything I did had to be manly and follow guidelines already created for me. Every step of my life told me to grow up, to be a man, whether in the media or life experiences with family and friends. I was also socialized to be in a middle class, where I can get to a higher place in my life if I work or try hard enough. I cannot depend on money to get to get me to the top, I have to earn it. And finally I also talked about gender and used the example on the boy that liked to wear dresses. On this paragraph I put that I have been socialized to be straight through media and from people around me and how my gender decides how people see me, and what they expect. Without all of these restrictions and narrow ways of thinking, I honestly believe every single one of us can be free! Sources: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/socialization |
